Youth is a powerful commodity, and hip hop and rap music today is being dominated by youthful influences. Hip hop creates diverse subcultures that are more inclusive today than ever before as the music made and listened to creeps its way into the things we read, wear, value and believe. First year Journalism student, Eyethu Maqgwaza, adores the pop culture around him but Steezy McLovin’, his rap persona, doesn’t just embrace this influential energy, he creates and recreates it. Steezy McLovin’ epitomizes the renaissance of fashion that is occurring right now. He’s pausing time, playing with it, and ultimately, transcending it. If you look at him in class, he’s the fashion-forward, outspoken but hardworking cool kid, but when you listen to him, you’ll discover there’s more to his bold presence than meets the eye. More than in just his clothing, the kid is layered.
